Description
This banner was made about 1950 but later changes were made to some parts of the banner.

The origins of the National Union of Agricultural Workers date from 1906. The name was adopted in 1920, but the organization changed its name to the National Union of Agricultural and Allied Workers in 1968. It became part of the the Transport and General Workers Union in 1981. It not only represented farm workers, but also cartes, road workers and gardeners.

The maker is recorded as C.A.S. Ltd of London, which is almost certainly the Co-operative Arts Service .

The sheep on the banner's central panel is the Clun Forest breed. Clun is an ancient market town in the southwest of Shropshire.

Collected from TGWU Rurla workers section, Shrewsbury, 13.11.1993. See photos in historic file.

Materials: double layer ground of polyester rep fabric with painted lettering. The centre panel on each side is oil-painted cotton applied to the polyester rep.
