More in Common

Do you believe we can live together in a multicultural society without labels?  Are you looking for a space to meet a diverse range of people?  Be part of a group getting together at PHM every fortnight to meet, discuss, and explore what we have in common.  Inspired by the legacy of murdered MP Jo Cox, the creation of a social space is at the heart of PHM’s More in Common project; a dedicated area of the museum will be designed for special events, regular gatherings and community use.  Want to get involved?  Just fill in this short online application form by Sunday 22 December 2019.

The Unfurlings – a banner display

On show until Sunday 19 January 2020, don’t miss this vibrant exhibition of banners filling the museum’s Engine Hall.  Photographer Ian Beesley, cartoonist Tony Husband and poet Ian McMillan have been working with dementia groups around the country, creating 16 banners campaigning for a better understanding and representation of those living with dementia.  These banners, based on traditional trade union designs, are important symbols of self-reliance and tangible proof of existence.

Protest Lab

On show until Sunday 23 February 2020, don’t miss our Disrupt? Peterloo and Protest exhibition, marking the bicentenary of the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester in 1819.  To explore issues within our democracy that people are campaigning for 200 years on from Peterloo, we asked people to add their own objects that tell a story about protest to the Protest Lab; an experimental space within the exhibition.  Read new blog post to find out how the space was created and get an insight into which contemporary objects have been collected for display.

Festive fun

Looking for gifts with a difference?  Shop independent at PHM and treat the radicals in your life from our unique range of gifts and books.  Got the family staying over Christmas?  Bring them to visit the national museum of democracy and explore ideas worth fighting for.  Take time out in the Doodle Den, a relaxed space where visitors of all ages can pick up a pencil and explore the museum’s collections through scribbling, sketching an silliness.  We’re closed 24, 25, 26 December 2019 and 1 January 2020, but otherwise open as usual and looking forward to welcoming you!

Radical Lates

Ideas worth fighting for have often been debated under the cover of darkness, in secret and away from prying eyes.  Every second Thursday each month the whole museum, shop, and cafe are open until 8.00pm for you to explore, with a regular programme of exciting and quirky happenings.  Join us on Thursday 9 January 2020 to meet the movement We Shall Overcome; a collective of musicians and artists working across Britain under the banner ‘not charity but solidarity’.  Come along to find out more about the movement through an evening of film, live music, poetry, a panel discussion and Q&A.

PHM’s 10th birthday!

Join us to celebrate PHM’s 10th birthday as the home of ideas worth fighting for!  Save the date Thursday 13 February 2020 for a special Radical Late opening, with a democratic disco, performances, party food and more.  Show your love for PHM on Valentine’s Day on a Radical Relationships guided tour, and enjoy a musical evening Love Letter to PHM from Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.  Continue the celebrations into the weekend and join an Open house at PHM! as we invite new and returning visitors for a bumper day of free activities for all ages; help us celebrate our achievements or come and find out what we’re all about.
