People’s History Museum 10 years on

Last night we welcomed over 600 guests to kick off the celebrations of the museum’s 10th birthday as the home of ideas worth fighting for.  Friends, supporters, staff and volunteers old and new came together to show their love for PHM, enjoying a democratic disco, performances, party food and birthday cake!  The night also saw the launch of PHM’s Impact Report charting the museum’s success over the last decade.  The report is included in a new blog by PHM Director Katy Ashton, where she shares why, as the national museum of democracy, PHM’s collections and our work have never been as relevant or resonant as they are today.  With pride, excitement and hope, Katy reflects on where we have been, where we are now, and where we go next.

Open house at PHM! Sat 15 February

Continue the celebrations into the weekend at PHM’s open house; a bumper day of free activities!  Join behind the scenes tours, a closer look at archive highlights, interactive music and story sessions for little radicals, craft activities, object handling, live music and more, and help us celebrate our achievements or come and find out what we’re all about.  Continue the Family Friendly activities throughout the half term holiday; Make Your Mark with craftivism and design your own felt arrow inspired by imprisoned suffragettes of the past, decorated with a message of protest for the future.  Take time out in the Doodle Den, a relaxed space where visitors of all ages can pick up a pencil and explore the museum’s collections through scribbling, sketching and silliness.

PHM’s ten treasures

PHM is the UK’s only museum entirely dedicated to sharing the stories of the revolutionaries, reformers, workers, voters and citizens who championed, then and now, for change and rallied for rights and equality.  We do this by working alongside the communities whose stories the museum tells and through an eclectic and colourful collection that features banners, badges, posters, artwork, cartoons, placards, personal items and more.  To mark ten years in its current home, PHM’s team has picked out ten treasures that they believe capture the ethos, spirit and importance of People’s History Museum’s collection.
