We have a wealth of skills and experience in conservation of all kinds and we are often host to students and volunteers wanting to learn with us.
Jenny is our Conservation Manager, she is a trained and accredited Textiles Conservator and an expert in her field, she has an extensive knowledge of social history textiles across the UK and an in depth knowledge of banner use and manufacture.
She is responsible for the management of the studio and arranging external commissions with clients for income generation for the museum.
Kloe is our Objects Conservator, she is trained in the conservation of all object types and is specialising in the conservation of large textiles.
She works closely with the Collections & Engagement Team, helping to develop and deliver exhibitions, loans and maintaining the main galleries.
We often have requests from students and volunteers to do work placements with us. These people can be students of conservation already, or those who are interested in a career in heritage and museums. We try to accommodate these where possible and aim to have at least one summer placement each year. Projects are selected and designed for the individuals experience and interests, but they often will encompass both practical conservation and tasks associated with the day to day care of the collection
Teaching in this way is central to how we plan for the care of the collection. This gives us the chance to conduct conservation treatments and projects that may not otherwise happen, as part of teaching and learning experiences.
