Event | The origins of Jewish immigration social history in Manchester and London

Join a host of experts exploring the maverick curators and grassroots historians who pioneered the collection of objects and stories of everyday life in these Jewish immigrant communities, and how these oral history collections are being used today.

With Professor Nadia Valman, co-director of the Raphael Samuel History Centre at Queen Mary University of London, Dr Rachel Lichtenstein, writer and oral historian of Manchester Centre for Public History & Heritage at Manchester Metropolitan University, Professor Tony Kushner from the Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations and History Department at the University of Southampton, and Dr Ros Livshin, historian of Jewish Manchester.

Visit the Memory Map of Jewish Manchester, an interactive website, which maps stories, histories and memories of the Jewish community who once lived in the Cheetham Hill, Strangeways and Hightown areas of North Manchester between the two world wars.  This can also be accessed in the Vanished Streets: an exhibition of photographs of lost Jewish Manchester from the 1970s by Shloimy Alman at People’s History Museum (20 October 2021 – 16 January 2022).
