Take a guided tour of the main galleries with PHM Programme Officer Michael Powell, then drop-in to the archive and delve into PHM’s incredible collection of original 1819 newspapers.
See PHM’s 2019 acquisition, the Peterloo cane; one of the few artefacts from the time. Carried on the day (16 August 1819) by one of the protestors at Peterloo, and donated by a descendant of the owner, it is now on permanent display in Main Gallery One. The museum’s collection also includes newspapers covering the 1820 trial of Henry Hunt. Hunt was the radical speaker thousands marched to hear at Peterloo, who was arrested and imprisoned on that defining day for Britain’s democracy.
