Event | Over Here Zine Fest 2022

Over Here Zine Fest brings together zine makers, artists, writers and activists for a day of workshops, talks and stalls.  A not-for-profit event, it will showcase the work of Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) people and People of Colour (POC).

The aim is to build self-sustaining alternative models for publishing, art, activism and collaboration in our communities.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Organised by a group of people identifying at QTIPOC (Queer, Transgender and Intersex People of Colour) who are based in the north of England.

Suitable for ages 11+

• Sign up on the day for the workshops, places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Programme for the day:

• 11.00am – 3.00pm: Drop in zine making and colouring in activities
  Make a one page zine, get creative, or do some colouring in.
  Suitable for all ages.
• 11.00am – 12.00pm: Block printing postcards with Green Jay Crafts
  Learn how to use block printing to create your own postcards!  Draw up a design, carve it out onto a block of lino, roll on the ink and print out your cards.  Materials provided.
  Suitable for all ages and skill levels (under 8s need adult supervision).
• 12.30pm – 1.30pm: Poetry workshop with Commonword Cultureword
  Poetry is a great way to express yourself and perfect for sharing in zines.  Poet Radhaika Kapur from Manchester writing organisation Commonword Cultureword will help you get creative with words.
  Expect a hopeful climate change poetry workshop inspired by natural forms.  You can then turn your work into a zine at the drop in zine making session.
  Suitable for ages 8+, no previous experience needed.
• 2.00pm – 3.00pm: What’s names got to do with it?  With Sharonjit Kaur Sutton
  Artist Sharonjit Kaur Sutton is inviting everyone to an open discussion about names, and to create their own zines around this theme.  What do our names mean?  Where have they come from?  Why do they matter?  Do they matter?  Why do we change them?  You can share stories of your own, or someone you know – or you might just feel like having a chat!
  Inspired by Sharonjit’s personal project His Name’s Not Charlie, which started with the story of her Grandad (Ranjinder Singh Gill) who migrated from Kenya to London in the 1970s but was given the name ‘Charlie’ by his British friends and colleagues – which raised interesting conversations about how names hold a person’s, and community’s, history and identity.
