Join two presentations, part of PHM’s OUTing the Past Festival:

Telling stories: oral history highlights from the West Yorkshire Queer Stories collection
Tash Lyons, volunteer at West Yorkshire Queer Stories (WYQS), explores the important contributions West Yorkshire has made to LGBTIQ+ history through oral history highlights from the WYQS collection.

The presentation will also look at the need to give LGBTIQ+ people a voice and make their stories visible, but also the need for people to listen to each other, to understand different perspectives and to accept that not everyone is in a position to be ‘out’ and to tell their story.

West Yorkshire Queer Stories is a National Lottery Heritage Fund supported project that has collected over 150 oral history testimonies from LGBTIQ+ people from around the region. The project has stories from young and old, covering people from a range of backgrounds and different sexualities and genders. Visit the WYQS website to access their collection.

From RAF to Mr Gay UK to Lord Mayor of Manchester to LGBT Advisor to the Mayor of Greater Manchester
Carl Austin-Behan, LGBT Advisor to the Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham, talks about his personal experience of being discharged from the RAF for being ‘incomparable to service life’, winning Mr Gay UK and becoming the youngest and first openly gay Lord Mayor of Manchester in 2016.
