Description
Friendly Societies or Benefit Clubs originated in the 18th century as local organisations, principally of skilled working men, which provided sickness, burial and sometimes unemployment benefit. During the 19th century, local societies were taken over by national friendly societies, which could offer greater security.
The Foresters and the Oddfellows were the biggest national friendly societies. These two names are today often perpetuated in pub names.
Materials: Oil paint on silk.
