The origins of DATA go back to 1913 when the Association of Engineering and Shipbuilding Draughtsmen was formed on Clydeside. During World War I membership of AESD increased and in 1917 stood at 10,000 throughout the country. In 1944 the union secured a national minimum rate for the industry following agreement with the Engineering Employers' Federation. In 1961 the union changed its name to DATA.
Each of the sixteen divisions of DATA possessed a similar banner, based on the set-square design.
Materials: Double layer ground of blue cotton or rayon rep fabric, with machine sewn applied design.
