Description
This large banner was pushed on a banner carriage on marches and parades.
The United Kingdom Society of Coachmakers was founded in 1834 and in 1919 became part of the National Union of Vehicle Builders, which in turn joined with other unions to become the Transport and General Workers' Union in 1972.
The image contains the emblems of England, Scotland and Ireland on the boss between the front legs of the horse on the right. The design also incorporates roses, thistles and shamrocks.
This banner was manufactured by Kenning.
Conserved in 1998 in the museum's Textile Conservation Studio.
Materials: Rep woven silk ground and borders with hand painted oil-based image. 'Rep' is a ribbed or corded fabric.
