Description
The Union of Communications Workers (UCW) was founded in 1981, although its origins go back to the Union of Post Office Workers, established in 1919. The latter merged with workers from the wider communications sectors to form the UCW. In 1995 the UCW merged with the National Communications Union to form the Communications Workers Union.
The banner was made at the instigation of UCW General Secretary Alan Tuffin. His aim was to illustrate trade unionism througout the communication and print industries and the internationalisation of trade unionism. The initials PTTI stand for 'Postal, Telegraph and Telephone International', this being the international body for postal and telecommunications unions.
