Description
During World War II many black Londoners volunteered as air raid wardens, firewatchers, and stretcher bearers on the 'Home Front'. In the late 1930s, Britain's largest black community was in east London's dockland; it was estimated that there were over 290 black working class families living in that area at the time. Unfortunately we know nothing about the sitter, not even his name. His ARP badge is stitched onto his tunic, close to his collar.
