Description
The Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers formed as a result of a union amalgamating, splitting and then reforming. The Operative Society of Bricklayers, which started in Manchester in the first half of the 19th century, Between 1831 and 1834 the society and six other parts of the building sector formed the Operative Builder's Union. The Operative Builder's Union collapsed in 1834/5, and in 1848 after a period of strikes and financial hardship the London and Manchester sections of the society split back into two distinct groups, becoming the Manchester Unity of Operative Bricklayers Society and the London Order of Operative Bricklayers Society. These two societies then rejoined with the Friendly Society of Operative Stonemasons in 1921 to establish the Amaglamated Union of Building Trade Workers. In 1971 it joined the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers and Decorators to form the Union of Construction Allied Trades and Technicians. "Ad Alta" on the badge is Latin for "to the
summit", or "to the top".
