Description
Prior to the formation of a united society there were local slaters' clubs in Birmingham, Hull, Liverpool, Newcastle, Nottingham, South Shields, Stockton-on-Tees, Sunderland and York. These local societies amalagamated in 1873 to form a federation of unknown name, operating from Sheffield. Some time during 1882-5 the society was reconstituted under the name of the Amalgamated Slaters of England Provident Society. The objects of the union were to protect the general security and regulation of the trade, and to raise a fund for death benefit and accident, sickness and unemployment relief. The name The Amalgamated Slaters and Tilers Provident Society of England and Ireland was introduced in 1886 but was rarely used. In 1946 (although other sources date it at 1963) the society changed its name to the Amalgamated Slaters, Tilers and Roofing Operatives' Society. In 1969 it merged with the Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers.
