Description
A.J. Waudby was a successful professional painter and an exhibitor at the Royal Academy, London. He received many commissions from trade unions to produce emblems.
The Amalgamated Society Of Carpenters And Joiners, established in 1860, was a 'new model union': financially-secure, with a national office and paid secretary, a large membership, and an executive exercising substantial control. These factors and the range of benefits available to paid-up members are well represented in the images and panels of this emblem design. Emblems promoted the benefits of union membership well over a century before the Welfare state was established.
The design places Joseph of Nazareth, a carpenter, at the top of the emblem, and symbols of Peace and Friendship are set below the more common-place, classical female figures of Industry and Art.
