Description
When World War II began in September 1939, the government thought that large cities would be the target for German bombs and that casualties would be high. Evacuation was therefore introduced to move school children out of the cities to the countryside to stay with other families or adults. The children assembled in the school playground and were each given an evacuee armband to wear and name tags and they had to carry a gas mask.

This armband was issued by London County Council (LCC) and the number on it, 887, was the record number for the child evacuee. The wearer of this armband was evacuated to Woking in Surrey in September 1939. Evacuation was often an upsetting period for many children as they were separated from their parents.
