Description
'El Instituto Para Obreros' poster, by Mauricio Amster, around 1936-1939

This poster shows an image of a man's arm raised, holding a selection of books with an arithmatic book on top, with factories and chimneys in the background to represent workers. The poster reads "EL MINISTERIO DE INSTRUCCION PUBLICA ACABA DE CREAR EN MADRID. EL INSTITUTOS PARA OBREROS" which translates to "The Ministry of Public Education has just created in Madrid the Institute for Workers".

The poster was designed by Maruicio Amster, and printed by the Unión General de Trabajadores (“Worker´s General Union”) (U.G.T) and the Confederación General de Trabajadores (“Workers’ National Confederation”) (C.N.T). The U.G.T is a Socialist Trade Union, which still exists as a trade union. It used to be linked to P.S.O.E (Partido Socialista Obrero Español “Spanish Socialist Worker Party”) until 1980. It was one of the biggest Trade Union during the Spanish Civil War, even his General Secretary Largo Caballero, who was named “ The Spanish Lenin” was Prime minister during the war. The C.N.T was an anarcho-syndicalist labour union, one of the biggest during Spanish Civil War and the most powerful one in Catalonia and was involved, like George Orwell, in the fight during May Days of Barcelona in 1937.
