Description
National Women's Social and Political Union (NWSPU) Brighton Branch banner, about 1903

Women used their 'traditional' skills such as embroidery, sewing and other crafts to promote the suffragette cause. This banner, which includes Brighton's coat of arms, would have been used in marches and demonstrations both locally and in London.

Materials: Purple drill woven wool fabric with letters of white cotton sateen, couched in place with white silk braid. Coat of arms and fish are hand embroidered.

The banner was Conserved at the museum's Textile Conservation Studio in 1992 with financial assistance from the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
