Description
Sash, from the National Union of Railwaymen, Kensal Green, Shopman, H J. A green sash with red border stripes and metallic detailing. The ground fabric is warp-faced, with green and red silk warps and green cotton wefts. Coiled metallic thread embroidery depicts a train with black threads filling in additional details, a wrench and a hammer crossing over one another to form an ‘X,’ and several lines of text reading ’N.U of Railway Men of E.I.S&W // Kensal Green Branch // (Shopman) H.J.’ with a laurel leaves design below. A hook has been hand stitched onto the underside of the ground fabric at the top fold, likely to keep the sash secure when worn. About 90mm below the embroidery is a tassel-dome (30mm x 30mm x 25mm) with seven cords hanging below (each 70mm long) on the right edge of the object. There is a 75mm metallic fringe at both ends of the sash which has been machine stitched to the edge of the ground fabric.
