Description
Thomas Paine was born in Thetford on 29 January 1737 and was an apprentice corset maker before becoming a journalist. Part One of The Rights of Man, published in 1791, was banned for the views Paine expressed. Part Two was published in 1792. This engraving supports the establishment view and shows Paine dreaming about judgement and punishment. The Whigs, Charles James Fox and John Horne Tooke, are shown beside Paine. They too are "in league" with the devil, who is escaping. Although Paine is shown wearing a French revolutionary's cap, he did oppose the French King's execution. Paine died in America on 8 June 1809
