The International Workers' Olympiads were international sporting events arranged between 1925 and 1937 by Socialist Workers' Sport International (SASI) as an alternative to the Olympic Games. The 1936 games were due to begin in Barcelona on 19 July 1936. However, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War the day before saw the games cancelled, and the athletes told to return home.
