Description
Image on front by artist James Gillray. Front and inside both read "The friend of the people and his petty-new-tax-gatherer, paying John Bull a visit. 28 May 1806". Middle left also contains the following description: "Pitt's death on the 23rd January had brought Fox and his friends back to power after 23 years in the wilderness. Notwithstanding their oft-reiterated contention that Pitt's tax policies had been excessive, they quickly advanced by property duty to 10 per cent. This point is pressed by Fox and Lord Henry Petty, aged twenty-six, the new Chancellor of the Exchequer." Middle right has stamp of Chancellor of the Exchequer, printed message "Best wishes for Christmas and the new Year" as well as "11 Downing Street, London S.W.1" and is signed by an individual with the initials D.D.
