Description
This poster is advertising an event which was a benefit for the African National Congress. The event was organised by a group called "women alive" and the poster was sponsored by Marxism today. The poster is white, black and orange with diagonal headings across the page, alternating between orange and white. The top of the poster says "sponsored by Marxism today", "Women Alive presents" and "benefit for the ANC." The event title is "Alive and Kicking - An Evening Cabaret for Women." The rest of the poster has more information about the cabaret event, saying "Featuring Madonna in Slag City' All female theatre for 18 women with music/starring the Sadista sisters. Plus off beat women's big band, Funky foot-topping extravaganza-swing along. Also hot food, bar and disco. Saturday 5th July 7.30pm. Camden Centre. Bidborough Street Kings Cross. London WC1/ Fully Accessible." The bottom right of the poster has more general information written in white text. This text says "Prices 4 waged/ 2

The event advertised was a benefit for the African National Congress which was a political party/movement to end apartheid, campaigning for full voting rights and other freedoms to Black and Mixed Race South Africans. The ANC was made illegal in 1960, and started using guerrilla warfare. After the thirty year "ban" many members, including Nelson Mandela, had been imprisoned or forced to flee. In 1990 the ban was repealed, and apartheid was abolished in 1994. The ANC were allowed to stand for general election. The ANC calls for National liberation and is part of the socialist international.
