Description
This is a print of a painting by Richard Josey in 1878, depicting the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, Anthony Ashley-Cooper. The Earl is depicted as an older man, sat at a desk with his hands in his lap and a brooch on his coat. Writing on the frame of the page reads "To Mr J F Sexton with the ... compliments, Richard Josey" and writing on the reverse side reads "Earl of Shaftesbury". Small print along the top of the portrait reads " London published April 2nd 1878 by Henry Graves & co, the Proprietors Publishers to H.M the Dissen and J.R.H the Prince & Princess of Wales & Pall-Mall - Copyright Registered." The Earl of Shaftesbury was a British philanthropist, social reformer, and Tory politician. He was a strong supporter of the Duke of Wellington and introduced a number of child labour and factory reform laws into parliament. He was also a big supporter of the Christian Zionist movement. The portrait is
mounted in a cardboard frame for conservation purposes.
