'The Past is Another Country' by David Rumsey, Oil on Board

This painting depcits key scenes and people from the 1984-1985 Miner's Strike, both in Kent and around the UK, as well as figures from Labour history such as Kier Hardie. The painting was started by the artist in 1984, almost immediately after the strike began, but was not completed until 2012.

At the time of the strike, the artist was living in Herne Bay, and was an active member of the local Miners Support Group, along with his wife who donated the piece.

Some of the key features of the painting include a National Coal Board sign, the battle of Orgreave, Women Against Pit Closures, international support for the Miner's Strike, miners' lamps, and canaries.
