Description
Duncan Whiteman's tie, cream fabric with embroidered arrow design, c. 1917

During World War One, the Military Service Act was introduced, which conscripted men into the armed forces to fight in the war. Duncan Whiteman declared himself to be a conscientious objector during World War One, refusing to fight on moral grounds. As with many consicentious objectors, Whiteman was imprisoned and was required to wear the 'prison arrows' on his tie. He later agreed to serve in the war by carrying out non-combat duties.
