Description
This is a small yellow poster with black text produced by the Communist Party of Great Britain during the start of the Second World War, 1940. The text reads: "War Time, 1940 / COST OF LIVING, LTD? / TO ALL WOMEN / 1 lb bacon - pre-war: 1s6d now: 2s" a number of other common food and household items are listed, along with their pre-war and current prices, including: sugar, meat, butter, cheese, fish, butter beans, and carrots" the pre and current prices are totalled up and the difference worked out in separate column, with black text asking "WHO GETS THIS?" underneath the price comparison chart text reads "Southend Communist Party / Invites you to come to have this account cleared up for you by / MADGE GUNSON / In the / CO-OPERATIVE HALL, (Corner of Essex St.) Southchurch Road / SUNDAY MARCH 17th at 7 p.m." The poster was printed by A.J Porter, 35 Clarence road, Southend-on-Sea. Madge Gunson was a trade unionist and chair of the Leyton branch of the Communist
Party during the war.
