Creator(s) Description
Disabled Lesbian Group postcard. A woman in a blue shirt and black trousers says "Mum I'm a lesbian!!". Her mum, who is wearing a blue floral dress, has long blonde hair and is facing away from the viewer, replies "Oohh... you have to be different don't you??"
These postcards were created by Julia Keenan as part of Manchester's Lesbian Community Project. The postcards use humour to tackle the issue of representation and acceptance of disabled members of the LGBTQ+ community, within the community itself. 1 in 3 LGBTQIA+ adults in the UK also has a disability, and LGBTQIA+ disabled people face the double discrimination of ableism within LGBTQIA+ spaces, and homophobia and transphobia within disabled services and spaces.
Deaf and disabled people, particularly those with learning disabilities, are often not supported by their families, teachers or paid carers to learn about relationships, sex or sexuality due to societal prejudice against the idea of disabled people being sexually active.
