Description
Yellow and black poster with a graphic of a skeletal hand holding a hydrogen bomb and a human hand rising up to stop it, between 1955 and 1971. The top half of this poster is mainly black, with the exception of the white skeletal hand and a yellow trail for the hydrogen missile. The bottom half of the poster features a yellow background in the form of factory chimneys blowing smoke, perhaps a reference to weapons manufacturers. A large white human hand covers the bottom right of the poster. Black text within the hand reads 'young people say.. ' and black text on the yellow underneath reads 'Ban the bomb.' Hydrogen bombs were first tested in the UK in 1957, under Anthony Eden's government during the Cold War. The detonation of Hydrogen bombs sparked the CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) movement in the UK, one of the biggest peace movements to date. This poster was designed by Ken Sprague, a political cartoonist who
often made a stand against arms and weapon manufacturng through his art. The poster is a layered screen print and features Sprague's signature along the left hand side. It was printed at the British Youth Festival in Camden. Condition: good. There is a crease running through the middle of the poster where it has been folded.
