Description
White circular badge reading "transgender"

This badge is designed to tell the viewer that the wearer is a transgender or trans person. This means someone who doesn't identify with the gender they were assigned at birth. Some trans people choose not to disclose that they are trans, but others find it important to publicly claim.

Transgender identities have gained more visibility in British society since the 1960s when a series of high profile transgender people like trans women April Ashley and Jan Morris, and trans man Ewan Forbes talked publicly about their transitions. Despite this fairly recent public awareness in the UK, people who we might call transgender today have existed globally across many cultures, and since ancient times.
