Description
French Communist Party poster, 1945

This poster shows an image of Maurice Thorez above a mineworker and a crowd meant to represent mineworkers he addressed in a speech printed to the side of the image. The poster suggests that there is one duty for French workers: to produce. The bottom of the poster reads "Les Demagogues flattent le Peuple! Les Communistes l'appellent a l'effort!" (translated: The demaogues flatter the people! The Communists call them to work!). The poster is an election poster for the Parti Communiste Francais in the 1945 election, a time when re-building the French economy and identity was the paramount issue.

The poster ends with the words "Pour Une France Forte, Libre, et Heureuse" meaning, "For a Strong, Free and Happy France"
