Description
A purple A5 leaflet titled 'Kill the Bill'. The front cover features a police officer with a truncheon. There are six pages of written information inside.
This leaflet was created in 2021 in response to the Police, Crimes, Sentencing and Courts bill. The bill was introduced by the Conservative government under Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The bill covered a wide range of issues that are controversial and were protested extensively by civil liberties groups and impacted communities. Despite significant protests around the UK, the bill was passed and came into effect on 28 June 2022.
Some of the bill's rulings included:
- giving more power to the Home Office, and to police forces, to make regulations restricting the right to protest without consulting parliament including banning specific people from organising or taking part, setting start and end times for protests, re-routing marches and imposing noise restrictions.
- criminalising Gypsy Roma and Traveller (GRT) community practices by allowing police to fine, arrest and seize the vehicles of people camping in unauthorised places, even if they have no alternative halting site available. For GRT people who are nomadic, losing their vehicle also means losing their homes.
- expanding Stop and Search by introducing Serious Violence Reduction Orders. Stop and Search is disproportionately used against young Black men.
