Description
Dark green poster with a yellow spot and white text, around 1961. This poster was printed by the Communist Party of Great Britain during the Cold War to protest the Western Bloc's involvement in communist states. One of the main objections of the Communist Party and many others in the peace movement was the deployment of US nuclear weapons to UK bases and the threat of nuclear war. A large yellow spot is in the top left hand corner of the poster, next to which the words "Britain is in danger" are printed in white text. Underneath, the headings "Because of Nato...", "Aggressive Alliance", and "Britain's Safety Demands" are printed in yellow, with white bullet points underneath. The text is as follows: "BECAUSE OF NATO... American Polaris submarines are based here. American H-bombers and missiles are
based here. The Tories are helping to rebuild powerful West German armed forces commanded by Hitler's generals and providing training bases here for them. Nuclear weapons, mainly American, to the power of 898 megatone are stockpiled here. This is equal to 17 tons of TNT for every man two square miles of our country. Britain has no control over the American submarines, H-bombers and nuclear bombs. We have no control over the actions of the West German militarists. A mistaken order or a panic decision by an American submarine commander, or action by a West German commander could start a war. All Britain would be a nuclear target. AGGRESSIVE ALLIANCE Nato is an alliance of countries rules by Tory governments and dictators, in the interests of big businesses. It is preparing aggression against the socialist countries where the working people are in power. BRITAIN'S SAFETY DEMANDS Get out of NATO. End war alliances, replace the NATO and Warsaw pacts with a genuine all-European collective
security agreement." Condition: good
