Description
This is a white poster with red banners and white/red text. White text inside a red banner at the top reads "Britons demand" whilst red text in the centre reads "The right to live in peace" and below that is another red banner with white text reading "Communist campaign.", between 1955 and 1971. This poster was made at some point during the Cold War, a period of geopolitical tension between the USA and the Soviet Union which also spread to allied states- known as the Eastern bloc (also known as the Communist/socialist/Soviet bloc) and the Western bloc (also known as the Free/capitalist/American bloc). The Cold War era began in the latter half of the 1940's and lasted until the late 1980's/early 1990's. During this time, missiles were being developed by both sides that could be used to launch nuclear attacks. This was met with a lot of resistance as the effects of nuclear war would be deadly; the Communist Party and other organisations in what came to be seen as the Peace Movement often campaigned for the UK to take a stand against the development and deployment of nuclear weapons, within its borders and also more generally. This poster is part of a campaign to push the UK government to enter into talks with the USSR and the US to stop the nuclear arms race and end the Cold War. Condition: slight dirt marks, indents where the poster was previously held in a frame. There is a finger print mark in the 'A' of peace where someone has touched the ink whilst still wet.
