Description
Large red, white and black poster. There is a white background, and in black text it says "Vote." Underneath this there is very large red text saying "NO", and underneath it says "on June 5." Underneath this there is the "Morning Star" logo which is a socialist newspaper. This poster is most likely referring to the United Kingdom European Communities membership referendum. This referendum took place on June 5 1975. This was a U.K vote to decide whether the country should remain a member of the European Communities (common market). This was the first national referendum ever to be held throughout the United Kingdom. It was the only referendum to be held on the UK's relationship with Europe until the 2016 referendum on membership of the European Union. The referendum resulted in 67% for continued European Communities membership. Historically, the labour party feared the consequences of EC membership, due to issues of trade, prices, loss of economic sovereignty and the freedom of governments to engage in socialist industrial policies. This is why the morning star is saying to "vote NO." The Morning Star is a left-wing British newspaper, and is the longest running socialist newspaper. The paper is slightly frayed, and there is a rip on the bottom right of the poster. There is a strip of yellowed/brown tape on the bottom left.
