Description
This is a medium sized A3 poster, with a white background, and black, red and blue text. The top of the poster says "FREE" in large black text, with a blue line underneath. This is part of an imagine of the Chilean flag, with a white star in a blue box and red line underneath. The statement reads "FREE Luis Corvalan . - General Secretary of the Communist Party of Chile - Senator during the popular Unity government - and ALL OTHER POLITICAL PRISONERS IN CHILE." Next to text saying "LUIS CORVALAN", there is a drawing of a Corvalan's face, which is also placed above the star of the Chilean flag. Luis Alberto Corvalan Lepe was a Chilean politician and served as the general secretary of the Communist Party of Chile. In 1973, General Augusto Pinochet led a military coup, and Corvalan was among the many arrested. He was a prominent political prisoner, and while in prison he won the Lenin Peace Prize. The Soviet Union launched an international campaign for his release, and in 1976 Corvalan
was exchanged for a Soviet political prisoner, Vladimir Bukovsky. Corvalan received asylum in the USSR - he headed the Communist party of Chile - in Chile and while in exile , for 30 years, which covered the entirety of Pincohet's dictatorship. This poster was distributed by the American Communist party, and was calling for the freedom of Corvalan and other political prisoners in Chile, who were all imprisoned under Pinochet's dictatorship. The bottom of the poster has blue text saying "to protest write: Embassy of Chile, 1730 Massachusetts Ave., N.W.
