Description
A large white poster with a red box and black and white text. Cursive text at the top "Gaitskell or" and white text in a red box reads "Socialism" a large black question mark printed over the top. "by John Gollan" is written in the same cursive black font at the bottom. "Communist Party Pamphlet - price sixpence" is in red at the bottom. John Gollan was a lifelong socialist, trade union activist, and member of the Communist Party of Great Britain. He first got involved in politics during the general strike of 1926, after which he joined the Young Communist League (YCL) and went on to be elected general secretary of the Communist Party in 1954. Gollan wrote for the Daily Worker, the Communist Party's official newspaper, and released a number of publications with the Communist Party advocating for socialism in Britain. This pamphlet "Gaitskell or socialism?" argues against Gaitskellism, an ideology based on the
theories of Hugh Gaitskell, a Labour politician who rejected the economic policies of socialism and trade unions. It was published in 1960 by the Communist Party of Great Britain.
