Description
Part of "100 posters, socialist image, designed by Ettore Vitale for the direction of the Italian Socialist Party." This is part of a collection of one hundred Italian Socialist Party posters designed by artist, Ettore Vitale. This poster is large, with a white background. There is black text at the top of the poster saying "1 Maggio." This means 1st May. Underneath this there is an Italian Socialist Party logo which says "PSI" and has the image of a hammer and sickle. This poster is from 1973 - before the party changed the image to a red carnation. The bottom of the poster has a large hand in a fist, with a red carnation coming out of the side. The fist is commonly used as a symbol of power and resistance, and the red carnation symbolises socialism. The 1 May is International workers'day, also know as Labour day. This is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international Labour movementand occurs every year on May 1. It was abolished under the fascist regime and was restored after the second world war - May Day is now an important celebration in Italy and is a national holiday. This poster is in good condition
