Description
This poster is the 15th in a collection of posters about Pietro Nenni, an Italian socialist politician who was also the national secretary of the Italian Socialist Party (PSI) and a lifetime Senator since 1970. This poster is titled "Republic!" and features the front page of the Avanti! newspaper in June 1946 when Italy became a republic. Text underneath the image reads: "The popular referendum of 2 June 1946 marks the victory of the Republic and the birth of the Constituent Assembly. The special edition of Avanti !, released with the results at 1:00 am on June 5, opens with a "Thanks to Nenni" signed by the entire editorial staff and with a full-page title praising the Republic: "It was built patiently with the sweat and pain of millions of workers: the idea that triumphs today was fought by all the forces mobilized against freedom, democracy and progress by the old ruling class. God blesses the nascent Republic, to which the tremendous and marvelous task of redeeming the shameful past of the Monarchy and Fascism is committed in harmony and work, justice and freedom »> Nenni is elected deputy of the Constituent Assembly. He thinks that the victory is only a first step for a total renewal of Italian society. To this end he signs with Saragat and Pertini the pact of unity of action with the PCI represented by Togliatti, Longo and Scoccimarro." and the image caption reads: "In the photo above, Pietro Nenni's last appeal on the radio before the closing of the polls for the Referendum and the Constituent Assembly; on the right, Pietro Nenni's vote in a polling station in Rome. Below, the first page of Avanti! with the news of the victory: Italy+M434 is a Republic!" (all text translated from Italian)
