Description
This poster is the 8th in a collection of posters about Pietro Nenni, an Italian socialist politician who was also the national secretary of the Italian Socialist Party (PSI) and a lifetime Senator since 1970. This poster is titled "the first psi-pci pact of unity of action" and features two photographs of Nenni's idetification cards for both the part and its newspaper. Text along the left side of the images reads: "“There is a crisis of socialism. Is it a crisis of men? Is it a crisis of doctrine? It is both. / It comes from the difficulty that men, grown up in the environment of electoral democracy, try to adapt to our age, all dominated by the almost biological notion of force. It derives from a certain stagnation of Marxist thought which has become immobilized in the contemplation of formulas, instead of keeping in touch with social reality, which is in perpetual transformation. It derives, above all, from the fact that in a revolutionary era, the socialists are not always revolutionaries >>. The danger of fascism in Europe, with Hitler's coming to power in Germany, urges the socialist forces in France to achieve proletarian unity. / The first pact of unity of action between PSI and PCd'I was signed in Paris on August 17, 1934; a second larger and more articulated one on July 26, 1937." Whilst text underneath the images reads: "Above, the identification card issued by the PSI to Pietro Nenni, which shows on the right the Charter of Socialist Unity, reached in Paris between the two components of Italian socialism in July 1930. Below, the correspondent card issued to Nenni from the socialist newspaper «Le Peuple» in Brussels."
