Description
Tin-type photograph of Bridget Hickey.

This portrait photograph of Bridget Hickey, landlady of the Wades Arms in London in 1889.

This portrait photograph, taken in 1889, depicts Bridget Hickey, an Irish immigrant to London, who was the landlady of the Wades Arms pub in London during the Great Dock Strike. During the Strike, she allowed the strike organisers to use her pub as an unofficial headquarters, not only allowing committee meetings to be held there, but also the collection of donations and moneys for the strike fund.

Tom Mann, one of the strike organisers, wrote in his 1923 Memoirs, that Bridget Hickey "treated these follows - ourselves of the committee included - as though she had been mother to the lot".
