Description
Election poster featuring a black and white photo of Labour Party leader, Harold Wilson, an unsmiling white man with grey hair. Slogan: 'Now Britain's strong let's make it great to live in. When it comes down to it aren't Labour's ideals yours as well?'
The Labour Party's Harold Wilson (11 March 1916 â 24 May 1995) became Prime Minister in 1964, and oversaw a process of liberalising Britain's laws on perceived morality issues including abortion, divorce, and male homosexuality. By the 1970 General Election, he was unpopular due to increasing unemployment, perceived union domination of Labour Party politics, and economic issues.
Edward Heath's Conservative Party narrowly won the election, which was a surprise victory that opinion pollsters had not predicted. Wilson told the BBC that complacency after seeing Labour's good results in the opinion polls might have made Labour voters think it was less important they go out to vote themselves.
