Angela Davis is a Black American activist, adademic and author. She is a Marxist, Feminist and long-time member of the Communist Party. She was also active in the Black Power movement. In 1970, Davis was arrested and tried for supposedly supplying weapons for an 'attempted courthouse escape' of the Soledad Brothers. While a gun she had purchased had been used in the attempted escape, this had been purchased legally and a jury returned a verdict of 'Not Guilty' after it was decided that there was not enough evidence to connect her to the plot. Before her trial, Davis was imprisoned in a Women's Detention Centre, and was intially segregated from other prisoners by being placed in solitary confinement.
