Description
Hand-made poster, "Venceremos / Remember Chile" created for Sheffield Chile Week 1977.

The poster shows a hand-drawn outline of South America, with Chile coloured in red with a white star. Around the map is coloured in blue, representing the sea. Beneath the blue on the right-hand side you can see the outline of a flag previously started. The bottom of the page is decorated with a red stripe, and reads "Remember Chile". Above these words is a drawing of a bird, likely a dove to represent peace. Above the image reads "Venceremos" meaning "We Will Win". Along the left-hand edge reads "For more information about Chile Week ask at the caravan on the Cathedral fore court" and at the top of this are the words "Thanks you" and to the bottom, "Please". Next to the image of South America reads "Four years since the military coup of Sept 11th 1973" in red ink. To the right of the image reads "Sheffield Chile Week 1977".

Refugees from Chile arrived in Sheffield from 1973, following the military coup that installed Pinochet as dictator in Chile. Like many cities across the world who hosted Chilean refugees, Sheffield held solidarity events - both small and large - to raise awareness, support, and funds for those exiled from Chile, and those living under the military regime. This poster was advertising Sheffield Chile Week in 1977, which was held around the fourth anniversary of the military coup.

It is highly likely that the poster was made by a Chilean refugee, and includes the pencil line drawings from the design of the poster.
