Description
Poster advertising the 3rd Victor Jara Festival of Latin American Music in Exile, 1981.
The poster is coloured red, white and blue. The background is made to appear as a stylised image of the Chilean flag, with a white star on blue background, next to a white section and red below. From the red section a hand is raised with fist clenched around the neck of a guitar, which turns into a rifle muzzle protruding from the other side. Mounted on board and labelled as "Victor Jara Festival, Britain, 1981"
The poster is advertising the 3rd Victor Jara festival: a music event held to raise funds and awareness of the plight of people from Latin America who were living under dictatorial regimes or through civil wars between the right and left wings. The festival was organised by the VIctor Jara Committee and sponsored by the Chile Solidarity Campaign, Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign, Camden Scanner, the Chile Committee for Human Rights, El Salvador Solidarity Campaign, Artery, Carila Resource Centre, and CIIR.
The festival was named after Victor Jara, a Chilean musician who was murdered by the Pinochet regime due to his connections with the Allende regime, who were outsed in the 1973 Chilean Coup.
