Description
An election poster of Labour Party leader Harold Wilson MP shaking hands with a member of the public.

Harold Wilson (11 March 1916 – 24 May 1995) unexpectedly became leader of the Labour Party after the death of his predecessor, Hugh Gaiskell, in 1963. Born in Huddersfield, Wilson capitalised on his Northern identity to bill himself as a man of the people compared to his Conservative Party opponents. The slogan 'Let's go with Labour', and images of him interacting with every day people on election material was considered bold and modern at the time.

Wilson's Labour Party won the October 1964 election by a narrow margin, making him Prime Minister, and his government introduced a large number of laws liberalising society including relaxing divorce laws, and partially decriminalising abortion, use of birth control, and sex between men.
