This badge refers to Ruhollah Khomeini, the supreme religious leader (or ayatollah) of Iran from 1979 to 1989 following the Iranian Revolution. In power he instated laws that restricted the rights of women and LGBTQIA people, with same-sex activity punishable by death. A 1987 report of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights estimated that as many as 7000 LGBTQIA people were executed in Iran.
