Description
A red 'Manchester pocket guide' guidebook with a photo of the corner of the Manchester Corn Exchange on the cover. The Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games logo is in a yellow box on the right hand side of the guide - the logo is three people standing with outstretched arms.

This guidebook was produced for the 2002 Commonwealth Games which were hosted in Manchester. The guide includes a map of the city centre listing its unique areas including China Town, the Gay Village and the Northern Quarter, and information on navigating the city. The Manchester Commonwealth Games had the most events of any Commonwealth Games in history, featuring 281 events across 17 sports, including disabled competitions in swimming, bowls, table tennis, athletics, and weight lifting.

This object was donated as part of our Nothing About Us Without Us disabled people's history exhibition. The guide notes that it was published before an audit of accessible city centre attractions, transit routes and establishments had been completed. This demonstrates how disabled visitors attending the games were treated differently to non-disabled people as, despite disabled athletes competing at the Games, attendees and competitors weren't offered equal access to information to prepare for their time in the city.
