The National Union of Public Employees (NUPE) was a British trade union that existed from 1908-1993. It represented public sector workers in the NHS, universities, local government and the water industry. In 1993, NUPE merged with NALGO (National and Local Government Officers Association) and COHSE (Confederation of Health Service Employees) to form UNISON which is one of the largest unions in the UK.

Trade Union membership helps workers to negotiate during disputes with their employers - securing better pensions, wages and safety conditions. This practice, known as collective bargaining, puts workers in a stronger position than if they had to face their employer alone as individuals. Unions also provide representation for members if they have to go to employment tribunals over possible unfair treatment, or if they are discriminated against or bullied at work. A union steward is a representative who is empowered to speak on behalf on the union members, and represent them during grievances or negotiate with employers on their behalf.
